To those of us who lead average lives, the tales of those who lead... not so average lives are thrilling! Who doesn't love wading through crowds of rather dashing peasants in Assassins Creed, or executing (pardon the pun) an perfect ambush with Arcani? Thusly, we begin.
Top 7: Secret Societies
7. Arcani: Roman Britain
Think Roman secret service. They were field agents for the emperor at the end of the Western Emperor. How good were they? A single mention in all historical records found. Yeah, nice.
6. Illuminati: Renaissance Italy
These guys were the first athiests, and though science was the key to everything. Opposers of the Papacy. (Stops reading back cover of Angels and Demons). They rank low on the list because, even though they are the archtypical secret society, they've been hyped up too much to be really secret any more. Aparently they still exist and are the real power behind such figures as George Bush and Barrack Obama. Go figure.
5. Hashshashin Order: Medieval Middle East
Islamic assassins (in fact, that's where our word "assassin" ccomes from) that fought to eredicate greed and waste in their lands and institute a scientific and enlightened state. Order was eredicated by Hulagu Khan. Funny to note that they appear to have worked while high on opium (or hash), though Islamic officials deny this.
4. Knights Templar: Medieval East (Holy Land)
Defenders of pilgrims to the holy land. The first bankers too. (Not as I previously believed, Jews in Renaissance Italy.) What's so secretive about them? Well, various movies and such claim that they had a substantial treasure, they guard the "truth" about Christ's family, and were easy to kill in groups of 60. (Anyone?) Plus, they're knights, and that's just cool. Plus, if you ever need a villain, you have these guys!
3. Free Masons: Colonial America
To be honest, I have no idea who these guys are. They have chapters all over the US though. Go take a look, if your in the neighborhood. Maybe that's why they're #2.
2. The Mafia: Depression Era Chicago
As far as sneakiness goes, these guys must be the tops. The Mafia effectively owned Chicago. The police couldn't do a darn thing about them. That's the sign of mastery: a ruthless reputation, but still discreet enough to avoid incarceration for a long time. Shall we whack 'em boss?
