Army of Tomorrow...

While studying historic battles and ancient armies is all well and good, what type of combat could we expect in the future? When the human race eventually spreads to other planets and systems, war will remain inevitable. Will we fight as spaceship-to-spaceship, like in Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card? Or maybe the spacefaring Navy will only provide transportation and cover fire while troops duke it out on the ground, like in Robert A. Heilein's Starship Troopers?
Lets face it people, the earth isnt getting any younger, pretty soon this sort of thing will be reality. What style or strategy would you recommend? Lets see what the best of Science Fiction has to offer:

  1. War will become too destructive for any nation to undertake
With stupid amounts of energy and resources (I'm assuming we have Dyson spheres or something of the like) a nation could easily and ffetively utterly annihilate another before they have time to blink.
The only way to protect yourself would be to have an automated defense system that would kick in if you were destroyed so that no one would risk your wrath. Imagine the Cold War, with bigger bombs

  2. War would only be too destructive on a planet scale, as well, no "faction" would want to completely destroy a planet. I'm guessing that hospitable planets would be in short supply, therefore they will want to preserve them. Devices like the little doctor or nukes will never be used because they damage the goods. A ground assault or blockade is the only way. Only a COMPLETELY space-faring race would destroy a planet.

  3. Dyson sphere some stars
    Terraform planets with that energy
    Life

  4. Hmmm... Dyson spheres could work, but why go to all the trouble? You would need to build a new one in every system that you settled and where would the energy to build it come from?

  5. well, you;d have systems dedicated to harvesting, as all life on the nearby planets wold die due to the lack of light. You could alternate between harvesters worlds and living worlds. Or, build ringworlds. OR, build a dyson swarm and live on the small island created

  6. well, you do not need a solid sphere around a star to harvest a sufficient amount of energy, an array of satellites arrenged in a sphere around it would work well enough...

  7. i thought the future of warfare was robots, then clones, then robots who dress as clones.

  8. If you had read Starship Troopers you'd know the combat was not just on the ground. FYI.
